L'air de la mer rend libre

The film's title is beautiful, and so are the bride and groom, despite the fact that their faces look like attending someone's funeral. Pressured by his family, Saïd, the son of butchers, an Arab and a closeted homosexual, has agreed to marry Hadjira, a repentant sinner who became religious after a scandalous romance with a drug dealer. If not soul mates, the characters will be friends. From the young groom's nocturnal elopements, as he has a new Grindr date every night, to the emotional isolation of his wife, who despairs of getting pregnant, the film captures the same shuddering shame and loneliness beneath the smiling surface of appearances. In this new feature, Nadir Moknèche (Lola Pater) paints an intimate portrait of immigrant children torn between their desires and tradition. (based on Sandra Onana's review in Libération)
