For lesbians from around the world who flock to Lesbos - the historic birthplace of Sappho - their love for women is the foundation of their community, and over the last few decades, the international lesbian community has progressively grown on the island’s beaches. For the local population however (also denominated “Lesbians” in reference to their place of birth), the affluence of a new, bold and unabashed type of lesbians causes tension. From 1970 to 2010, Hadjimitriou, a lesbian and native to the island, documented these tensions with finesse while addressing the links and conflicts surrounding the crucial question: who does Lesbos belong to? Via captivating archives and interviews with both local and international lesbians, the filmmaker retraces more than 40 years of this unprecedented and complex cohabitation and offers a nuanced perspective to the story of this unique community.
