BEING BEBE

Before and after reality TV, there is always reality. This intimate portrait highlights the charismatic Marshall Ngwa, aka BeBe Zahara Benet, who became the first winner of the world-famous reality show RuPaul's Drag Race in 2009. Using more than 15 years of archive footage and interviews, the documentary follows his upbringing in homophobic Cameroon, his rise on the amateur drag circuit, US television and his recent tour. It virtuosically chronicles the ups and downs, successes and disappointments of a drag performer who, against all odds, chooses a creative life, the life he dreamed of in his native Cameroon!
