Drive-Away Dolls

Jamie, who strings together one-night stands, and Marian, much more reserved by nature, are two lesbian girlfriends living in Philadelphia. The two decide to get away from it all and take a road trip to Tallahassee, Florida, where they discover the lesbian bars of the East Coast. They join a drive-away, a form of car-sharing known in the US where you get a car for free in exchange for delivering a package. Due to a misunderstanding, they find themselves saddled with a mysterious cargo and a couple of not too skilled crooks on their heels....

Drive-Away Dolls is a joyous homage to 1960s American feminist B-movies such as Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! by Russ Meyer. 100% a Coen film, with its share of hard-boiled criminals and crazy situations, but also 100% lesbian thanks to Tricia Cooke, the film's co-writer who identifies as a lesbian and forms an unconventional couple with Ethan Coen. She insisted on painting an authentic picture of the world she knew, drawing on her own memories of her time in the lesbian milieu in the 1990s and early 2000s.
